Recovery Point Systems for IBM Power: Independent Profile
Recovery Point is a resiliency specialist, not a hosting provider, and one of only a handful of firms that covers IBM Z and IBM Power under one contract. Its IBM i design is storage-array replication rather than the logical replication most IBM i shops know. Here's what the company publishes, and what to confirm yourself.

What is Recovery Point Systems?
Recovery Point Systems provides disaster recovery and managed resiliency for IBM Z mainframe, IBM Power, and x86, covering IBM i and AIX. It is owned by Abry Partners, has around 110 staff, and runs two Uptime Institute Tier III certified data centers it owns in Maryland. Its IBM Power recovery design rests on enterprise storage replication, IBM Global Mirror, Dell EMC SRDF, and Pure asynchronous replication, with a supported array required at both ends. It does not offer MIMIX, PowerHA, or other IBM i logical replication, and it is not a production hosting provider. Gartner has recognised it in its DRaaS Market Guide for ten consecutive years, and in 2025 placed it in a four-provider category defined by legacy platform support and multiplatform orchestration.

What Recovery Point Does Well
Points that genuinely differentiate this provider, based on what it publishes and how it is positioned in the IBM Power market.
IBM Z and IBM Power under one contract
This is the strongest single reason to shortlist them. One provider, one orchestration platform, one console covering mainframe and Power. Since Sungard Availability Services collapsed and IBM's own resiliency business went to Kyndryl, almost nobody else does both for the mid-market.
Standard replication, not a proprietary lock-in
IBM Global Mirror, SRDF, and Pure replication are technologies your storage team likely already understands and could move elsewhere. The trade-off is that you need a supported array at both ends.
Orchestration they actually own
The Resiliency Management Platform came with the Geminare acquisition in 2021, so the automation is owned software rather than a licensed third-party tool or a spreadsheet runbook. Drift management flags configuration divergence between production and recovery before a test does.
Federal and defense compliance posture
ITAR, CMMC, NIST 800-171, FISMA, a Facilities Security Officer on staff, an active GSA schedule, and 100 percent onshore delivery. If a contract requires US-person handling of your recovery environment, a general hosting provider cannot match that.
Recovery is the whole business
DR is not an attachment sold alongside hosting. The engineering conversation starts at recovery objectives rather than at rack space, and it can sit behind on-premises Power hardware or another provider's platform.

Organizations that also run an IBM Z mainframe, that carry federal, defense, or ITAR obligations, or that already own DR hardware and want a hardened, orchestrated home for it. Also a fit where production stays on-premises or with another provider and the gap is purely a credible, tested recovery target.

Proceed with caution if
Two things narrow the fit. First, the storage prerequisite: replication requires an IBM FlashSystem, Dell PowerMax, or Pure FlashArray at both ends, and no IBM i logical replication option exists, so a smaller shop on internal disk or with an existing MIMIX investment may find the architecture does not fit or does not price. Second, geography: both Tier III data centers Recovery Point owns are in the same Maryland county about eight miles apart, and the other three facilities its investor references are not publicly identified, so do not assume geographic diversity without asking. Also note it publishes no IBM i release or POWER generation support matrix, its Power web content still uses iSeries and pSeries terminology, and it has had essentially no IBM i trade press coverage since 2020 while its mainframe content is detailed and current.

Decide first whether you want DR bundled with hosting or bought separately. Then check the storage question before anything else: if a supported enterprise array at the production end is a precondition you cannot meet, the conversation ends there regardless of how good the rest of the offering is.

Take these to the provider in writing. Anything that only exists in a slide deck is not a commitment.
Whether a supported array is a hard precondition
This determines viability more than anything else. Ask whether IBM FlashSystem, Dell PowerMax, or Pure FlashArray is required at your production end, and what it would cost you to get there if you are not already on one.
Where your recovery capacity physically sits
Both owned Tier III sites are in Montgomery County, Maryland. Get the specific facility named, confirm the distance from your production site, and check it meets any regulatory separation requirement you have.
Written RPO and RTO for your workload
The IBM Power technical page publishes no numbers. Get specific figures for your data volume in the contract, at the application level rather than the LPAR level, with the measurement method defined and remedies attached.
Included test days and the cost of more
Annual test time is an explicit pricing input, so tests are metered. Agree how many are included, who runs them, whether production is affected, and what written evidence you receive.
IBM i release and POWER generation support
No support matrix is published. Confirm your exact release and hardware generation are supported before you plan anything around it.
FedRAMP status, stated plainly
If a FedRAMP claim comes up in a sales conversation, ask for the FedRAMP Marketplace listing and package ID. A FISMA-aligned environment authorized under an agency ATO is a different thing, and often the right thing, but it is not the same claim.
Declaration terms
Clarify who can declare a disaster, how long capacity is held, what it costs during an extended event, and what happens if several customers declare against shared capacity at once.
Change-of-control provisions
Abry Partners has held this asset since 2020, which is at the long end of a typical private equity hold. Ask what happens to your contract and your pricing if the company is sold.

Is Recovery Point a hosting provider or a DR provider?
Primarily a resiliency and disaster recovery provider. It does sell colocation and hosting, and will house your own Power and storage hardware on a subscription basis, but no page describes a managed IBM Power production hosting product with OS administration, PTF management, or capacity planning. If you need day-to-day managed IBM i or AIX operations, pair it with a hosting provider.
Can I use MIMIX or PowerHA with Recovery Point?
Not as published. Its IBM Power design is storage-array replication using IBM Global Mirror, Dell EMC SRDF, or Pure asynchronous replication. MIMIX, PowerHA, Maxava, and Precisely Assure are not named anywhere in its material. That is a genuine architectural fork: storage replication gives you a crash-consistent full-system copy and simpler operations, but not a live, running, queryable target partition. If you already own a logical replication licence, ask explicitly whether it can be carried over.
Do I need specific storage hardware to use this?
Yes, on the published design. The IBM Power DRaaS page states that IBM FlashSystem, Dell EMC PowerMax, or Pure FlashArray is implemented at both sites, with Pure listed for AIX only. For a smaller IBM i shop running internal drives or an entry-level array, that can be a significant precondition. Ask about it in the first conversation, not the fifth.
Can Recovery Point protect Power hardware I still own?
That is the typical use case, and it will also house your own recovery hardware in its facilities on a subscription basis. Because the design uses standard storage replication rather than a proprietary agent, production can remain on your own hardware or at another provider while recovery runs at Recovery Point.
Is it a good fit if I also run a mainframe?
This is where it is strongest. It covers IBM Z and IBM Power under one contract with one orchestration platform, publishes honest tiered mainframe recovery objectives, and was named a Market Challenger for Mainframe as a Service in ISG's 2026 study for both the US and US public sector. Gartner has recognised it in its DRaaS Market Guide for ten consecutive years and in 2025 placed it in a four-provider category for legacy platform support and multiplatform orchestration.
What recovery time should I expect?
The IBM Power technical page publishes no figures. Marketing elsewhere claims AIX partition recovery in as little as 15 minutes, and one independent product review reports RTO of 30 minutes or less with RPO from seconds to an hour across the portfolio. Recovery time depends on your data volume, replication distance, storage platform, and how much of the partition recovery is orchestrated in advance. Insist on modeled figures and get them in the contract.
Does it support Linux on Power?
The IBM Power DR page names AIX and IBM i only, and the supported-platforms page lists Linux under x86. Confirm Linux on Power directly if that is part of your estate rather than assuming it is covered.
