There is no announced end-of-life date for AIX. As of August 2026, IBM's software lifecycle site lists AIX 7.2 and AIX 7.3 with no end-of-support date at all, and IBM's AIX lifecycle page shows the end of fix support for AIX 7.2 TL5 as 'to be determined' with another service pack targeted for December 2026. The dates that actually constrain you are technology level dates: AIX 7.3 TL2 stops receiving fixes on November 30, 2026, TL3 on December 31, 2027, and TL4 on December 31, 2028. The one genuine end-of-life date in the family belongs to AIX 7.1, whose paid extension availability completes on April 30, 2027. The Honest Answer to “When Is AIX End of Life?”
People searching for an AIX end-of-life date are usually looking for one number to put in a budget request. The accurate answer is uncomfortable but useful: IBM has not published one for the releases anybody is still running.
On IBM’s software lifecycle site, AIX Standard Edition 7.2.0 shows a general availability date of December 4, 2015 and no end-of-support date. IBM AIX 7 Standard Edition 7.3.0 shows general availability of December 10, 2021 and, again, no end-of-support date. Both entries were last refreshed in February 2026. Compare that with the withdrawn releases, where IBM publishes the full picture: AIX 6.1 transitioned to extended support on April 30, 2017 with extension availability completing April 30, 2020, and AIX 7.1 transitioned on April 30, 2023 with extension availability completing April 30, 2027. IBM is perfectly willing to publish these dates. It has not published them for 7.2 or 7.3 because it has not set them.
IBM’s AIX lifecycle page, last modified July 18, 2026, says the same thing from the other direction. It carries an explicit note that it does not indicate the end-of-service date for an AIX release unless that date has already passed, and it lists the end of fix support for AIX 7.2 TL5 as “to be determined” while simultaneously targeting a further service pack for December 4, 2026. IBM is still shipping fixes for a technology level that first appeared in November 2020.
You will find third-party lifecycle databases and maintenance vendors quoting a mid-2027 date for AIX 7.2. We could not trace that figure to an IBM announcement letter or lifecycle entry. It may turn out to be right. It is not, today, a commitment you can hold IBM to, and it is not a number we would build a migration budget around without an announcement letter number attached to it.
End of Fix Support vs. End of Service
AIX lifecycle confusion is mostly a vocabulary problem. IBM tracks two different things and the internet routinely merges them.
End of fix support (EoFS)belongs to a technology level. After a TL’s EoFS date, IBM stops creating fix packs, service packs, and interim fixes for it. Your release is still supported, you can still open a ticket, but the answer to a defect increasingly becomes “move up a technology level.” For a security-relevant defect, that is the whole difference.
End of service (EOS) belongs to the release. It is the point at which IBM support for that version of AIX ends and you either upgrade or buy a paid service extension. This is the date people mean when they say end of life, and it is the date IBM has not set for 7.2 or 7.3.
The practical consequence is that most AIX estates are exposed on the first clock, not the second. An LPAR sitting on AIX 7.3 TL1 stopped receiving fixes on December 31, 2025 even though AIX 7.3 as a release has no end date whatsoever. Nobody sent a letter, nothing broke, and the fix stream simply stopped. That is the failure mode this page exists to prevent.

AIX 7.1: The One Real Deadline
AIX 7.1 became generally available in September 2010, was withdrawn from marketing in November 2021, and reached end of standard support on April 30, 2023. Since then it has been available only through IBM’s paid service extension, and IBM’s lifecycle entry puts the completion of extended, sustained, and extension availability at April 30, 2027.
If you are still running AIX 7.1 in production, that is roughly twenty months of runway, and the fee-based extension is both more expensive and less proactive than standard support was. It is a bridge with a published end, which is the best kind, but it is a bridge nonetheless. The move from 7.1 to 7.3 is usually a bigger project than the version numbers suggest, particularly where third-party software, compilers, or Oracle and SAP stacks are involved, so twenty months is a planning horizon rather than a comfortable cushion.
Worth checking at the same time: whether the hardware underneath will take AIX 7.3 at all. A fair share of surviving AIX 7.1 estates sit on POWER7, which cannot.
The Hardware Trap Underneath the OS Decision
AIX 7.3 requires a 64-bit POWER8, POWER9, Power10, or Power11 processor, running in POWER8 or later compatibility mode. POWER7 and older systems cannot run it. That single requirement turns an operating system upgrade into a capital conversation for a meaningful slice of the installed base, and it lands in the same year as IBM’s Power9 hardware deadline.
Power9 scale-out servers, the S914, S922, S924, H922, H924, and L922, left IBM standard hardware support on January 31, 2026. So a shop on AIX 7.1 or an old AIX 7.2 technology level running on POWER7 or POWER8 hardware is facing two clocks at once: an operating system that needs to move and a server that either cannot host the destination or is already outside support itself.
IBM i shops will recognize the pattern, because IBM applies the same logic there. IBM i 7.6 requires Power10 or later, which caps a Power9 machine at IBM i 7.5. Whichever platform you run, IBM has aligned the operating system roadmap with the hardware roadmap deliberately, and the practical effect is that the two decisions should be made together rather than six months apart.
This is also the point at which cloud stops being an abstract option. On IBM Power Virtual Server or a managed Power hosting platform, the provider owns the processor generation, so “our hardware is too old for the release we need” stops being your constraint. It does not make the technology level upgrade go away, and it introduces a monthly run rate in place of a capital purchase, which is a genuine trade rather than a free win.
